On Game Day My Bed is My Living Room

The buzzer goes off and the crowd springs to their feet in an instant! Instinctively you follow suit, swinging your arms up in the air, standing up, and letting out your own victory cry – not thinking about the drink sloshing around in your hand and the bowl of popcorn on your lap. The liquid spills over the edge of the cup and splats down in big rain drops onto your bed, only to be covered by the flung popcorn.

There are, at minimum, 50 reasons to protect your bed (YouTube.com/Protectabed)

On average, people spend about a third of their life, or a total of about 318 months, in bed just in terms of sleeping. If you are someone whose bed is also their living room, there is a large chunk of time added on top of that. According to a study done by Nielsen, adults typically spend an average of six hours a day watching TV and videos. Spending these six hours in bed has become even easier since things can be streamed to tablets, phones, laptops, etc. All of which can easily find a comfy place next to you.

However, watching the game from the comfort of your bed risks spilled drinks, food crumbs or stains, and extra sweat. This can all lead to things like germs and mildew shortening the life of your mattress.

Is your bed ready for game day?

Throw in the Towel

Whether it be from refreshments caught in the crossfires of a celebration or the sorrowful tears of a heavy loss, your bed is up against a tough game season. If you do watch TV in bed, you could be watching the game with millions of your closest germ buddies.

A spill on your bed can soak into your mattress, which might lead to it smelling musty. After a few days, the problem could develop further into mold growing inside the mattress, even if the outside of the mattress feels dry. It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry and over-dry it because it only takes a small amount of moisture for mold and mildew growth. Both of which can have a damaging impact on health.

Steps for Cleaning up a Fumble:

  1. Begin by blotting the moisture with a cloth.
  2. Then, use a hair dryer on the area for 15-20 minutes, keeping the hairdryer at a safe distance from the mattress. Let the mattress cool down before checking to see if it’s dry.
  3. If it is not yet dry, dust cat litter over the damp area. Then, use a cloth to apply pressure to it. Repeat after two hours and use a wet/dry vacuum to clean the litter up.
  4. To ensure that the mattress dries all the way through, flip it on its side then open the windows and turn on the ceiling fan to create airflow in the room.
  5. Without saturating it, wipe down the mattress with a cloth dampened with a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half water to hinder mold growth.
  6. If you feel like you can’t entirely remove the moisture from the mattress consult a professional.

This is obviously not something you want to do while trying to relax and enjoy the game. To avoid having to do any of this in the first place, you can put in place preventative measures. Instead of limiting yourself to simply not eating or drinking in bed, mattress and pillow protectors allow you to relax in your quasi living room without any worries. If you do happen to spill, it won’t soak through and permanently damage your mattress and it will also make the cleanup exponentially easier; you'll only have to remove and wash the covers.

Eye on the Ball

A spilled drink isn’t the only thing that can lead to trouble. You might find yourself eating nachos so greasy that it causes a line of oil to drip down your hand each time you take a bite. Before you know it, the last seconds of the game are ticking down, impossibly fast legs are masterfully maneuvering in between opponents, moving closer and closer to the end zone – but the grease is dripping dangerously close to your lucky jersey and the paper towels are across the room. You do what you must and wipe the grease across your sheets. But this isn’t the end of the world, right?

Grease

Like drinks, grease and oils from food can soak into your mattress and can even stay there for years if uncleaned. Since your face is so close, if not on, your mattress when you sleep, you are breathing in all of this grime. This can actually lead to many negative health issues such as breathing problems, allergies, insomnia, and a weakened immune system.

Sweat

Another way your game day snacks could be affecting your mattress is through excess sweat (in addition to the anxiety induced sweat that comes along with the investment you have in your team).

The reason these foods cause you to sweat is twofold. The first is that watching TV while eating causes you to overeat due to mindless eating. Regardless of the food, if you eat too much of it it’ll cause you to sweat, due to thermogenesis which causes your body to emit heat while eating. The second is that certain foods have properties that cause you to sweat more. Unfortunately, it’s typically the unhealthy food we all love to snack on while watching the game. This is because your body is working harder to digest what’s in the food; the nervous system is overstimulated, your heart rate increases, blood vessels expand, and more.

Foods that cause sweating:

  • Processed, Fatty Foods: Low in fiber and lacking digestive enzymes.
  • Sugar and High-Carb Foods: Contain components that have high thermic effects overall.
  • Salty Foods: Excess sodium your body needs to get rid of through your skin.
  • Spicy Foods: Chemicals in the food make your brain think the core temperature of your body is rising, setting off the sweat glands.
  • Alcohol: Increases your heart rate and causes blood vessels to dilate, expanding your pores.

Like a spilled drink, there are long processes you can follow to clean up this mess. However, none are as easy as taking preemptive preparation measures like getting a mattress cover that ensures that your bedding is hygienic. Plus, you won’t have to give up any of your snack favorites.

Watching the game comfortably in bed might seem like the ideal set up, but there are a lot of potential drawbacks regarding what it does to your mattress. But you don’t have to give up this dream! Instead, protect your mattress and pillows so that you can experience the game the way it was intended, in your PJ's.

We hope this info and guidance is able to help you champion over germs and keep your bed/living room hygienic.
